Switching to Natural Deodorant: What to Expect

Natural deodorant does not stop you sweating. That is the single most useful thing to understand before you switch, and it is the reason most people who give up on natural deodorant give up in the first fortnight.

Here is what actually happens, honestly described.

Natural deodorant vs antiperspirant: what’s different

An antiperspirant blocks sweat. It uses aluminium salts that dissolve in sweat and form a temporary plug in the sweat duct, physically stopping perspiration from reaching the surface.

A deodorant does not stop sweat. It addresses the smell instead.

Sweat itself is almost odourless. The smell comes from bacteria on the skin breaking sweat down. Deal with that, and you deal with the odour — without interfering with a process the body does for a reason.

Most conventional products are antiperspirant-deodorant combinations, which is why switching to a true deodorant feels like such a change.

What aluminium-free actually means

It means no aluminium salts, so nothing is blocking your sweat ducts. You will sweat normally.

On the health question, we will be straight with you: the research linking aluminium in antiperspirants to serious illness is not conclusive, and we are not going to claim otherwise. Plenty of people simply prefer not to block a normal bodily function, or find antiperspirants irritating. Both are reasonable, and neither requires a scary claim to justify it.

The adjustment period — the part nobody mentions

If you are coming off an antiperspirant, expect roughly one to two weeks where you sweat more than you are used to.

This is normal. Your sweat glands have been partially blocked, sometimes for years. When you stop, they clear and resume working at full capacity. It feels like a lot because you are no longer used to it.

Some people notice a stronger smell for a few days during this window as the skin’s bacterial balance resettles. That passes too.

What helps:

  • Switch over a weekend or a quieter week, not the day before a big presentation
  • Wash with a gentle soap rather than an antibacterial one, which strips the skin
  • Reapply midday if you need to — natural deodorant is not a once-a-day product
  • Give it the full two weeks before deciding it does not work

Most people who say natural deodorant failed for them stopped on day four.

What the ingredients do

Zinc ricinoleate — derived from castor oil. It binds odour molecules rather than masking them. This is the main odour control in our formula.

Non-nano zinc oxide — absorbs moisture and adds a mild protective quality. Non-nano means the particles are large enough not to pass through the skin barrier.

Shea butter and sweet almond oil — the underarm is thin, frequently shaved skin. Conventional deodorants often leave it dry or irritated. These nourish it.

Fynbos beeswax — from our own hives in the Breede Valley. Gives the balm structure so it glides on rather than dragging.

Tea tree essential oil — a clean, fresh finish and a natural scent, with no synthetic fragrance.

A note on bicarbonate

Many natural deodorants use bicarbonate of soda, which works well but is alkaline. Underarm skin is slightly acidic, and for some people that mismatch causes redness or a rash — usually after a few weeks, not immediately.

If you have reacted to a natural deodorant before, bicarb is the likely culprit rather than natural deodorant in general. It is worth checking the ingredient list.

How to apply it

This is a balm, not a stick, and applying it like a stick is the other common reason people find it does not work.

  1. Warm a small amount between your fingers until it softens
  2. Smooth a thin, even layer over clean, dry underarms
  3. Let it absorb for a moment before dressing

A pea-sized amount per side is plenty. More does not improve performance, it just takes longer to absorb.

Apply to clean skin — over yesterday’s deodorant it will not work well.

Is it worth it

If you need to be guaranteed dry — a wedding, a job interview, a hot day in a suit — an antiperspirant does something a deodorant cannot, and there is no point pretending otherwise.

For everyday use, most people find that after the adjustment period they stop thinking about it. They sweat normally, they do not smell, and their underarm skin is in better condition than it was.

Our Natural Deodorant is handmade in small batches in the Western Cape, free from aluminium, parabens and synthetic fragrance.

Give it two weeks before you judge it.
